Delegated Behind the Wheel Trainer

 

PURPOSE

To establish a list of eligible candidates that will be used to fill current and future vacancies for the duration of the list, up to one year. The anticipated vacancy is a 12-month, full-time (8 hours/day) position located in the Student Safety & Transit Department at the District Office in Simi Valley.

Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of Student Safety & Transit, conducts behind the wheel training and evaluation for prospective and licensed school bus drivers and performs the duties of a Bus Driver.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts behind the wheel driver observations and behind the wheel proficiency check rides for prospective and licensed school bus drivers; trains drivers in the proper methods of operating a school bus; identifies improvements in driving and safety techniques and assists drivers in making improvements.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports pertaining to bus driver training and performance.
  • Drives a specially equipped school bus over designated and special routes in compliance with time schedules, picking up and discharging students.
  • Inspects bus prior to operation for safety purposes; cleans the interior and exterior of buses as needed, including but not limited to cleaning windshields and headlights, picking up debris, sweeping and mopping floors, wiping and cleaning upholstery, and removing graffiti. 
  • Services bus with fuel and oil; performs routine checks of belts, brakes, turning signals, lighting, hydraulic lifts, and other bus components and equipment; reports problems and equipment malfunctions.
  • Maintains appropriate behavior among students on buses in accordance with District policies and procedures; escorts students across streets when necessary.
  • Reports incidents affecting the safety of students; prepares, maintains, and submits records and reports as required by State and federal laws and District policies and procedures, such as incident and accident reports and records of trips.
  • Performs first aid and emergency assistance.
  • Participates in safety meetings and various trainings and workshops to maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills.
  • May transport students and chaperons on field trips to various locations according to scheduled departure and arrival times.
  • May repair upholstery using a commercial sewing/stitching machine and replace seats and frames.
  • May participate in moving office furniture and fixtures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
 A high school diploma or equivalent AND one year of school bus driver experience immediately preceding the date of selection as a delegated behind-the-wheel trainer
 Licenses and Certificates
 o    A valid California Class B Commercial Driver’s License with “P” Passenger Endorsement and School Bus (S) endorsements*
 o    Valid California Special Driver Certificate with “S” School Bus Endorsement*
 o    Valid medical examination certificate
 o    Valid First Aid and CPR certifications (or qualification by California Highway Patrol examination)
 o    Valid California Delegated Behind-The-Wheel Trainer or California Bus Driver Instructor credential; employees must complete the credential requirements within one year of hire date.
 •    *A driving record without a chargeable accident in any vehicle within the three years immediately preceding the date of selection as a delegated behind-the-wheel trainer

  • Goals and objectives of the school bus driver training program
  • Methods and techniques of effective training and evaluation
  • Safe bus driving practices sufficient to recognize problems and take appropriate action 
  • Operations of specially equipped buses 
  • State laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to school bus operations and pupil transportation, including those for students requiring accommodations
  • Applicable District rules, policies, and procedures
  • Routine equipment servicing
  • First aid practices 
  • Abilities
Requires the ability to:  
  • Observe, train, and evaluate school bus drivers in the operation of school buses
  • Interpret, apply, and explain laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to school bus operations and passenger transportation
  • Drive a school bus safely and efficiently while keeping to well-established schedules
  • Learn and apply new information, skills, and technology
  • Operate office equipment, including computers and supporting word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications
  • Operate transportation-related software programs
  • Use special devices and equipment for the transport of students with mobility needs
  • Maintain order among students, both while driving and at bus stops 
  • Recognize malfunctions in equipment and take appropriate action
  • Maintain an assigned vehicle in clean and safe operating condition, including performing routine servicing   
  • Administer first aid to ill or injured students
  • Prepare and maintain required records and reports
  • Carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Work productively with peers, students, parents, and members of the general public 
  • Learn designated bus routes, including stops and traffic hazards
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Physical Abilities
Requires: 
  • Ability to function in a vehicle and outdoors engaged in work of an active nature
  • Arm-hand and leg-foot dexterity to drive a bus
  • Visual acuity including depth perception
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time
  • Hearing sufficient to be aware of traffic and road distractions/conditions and listen to children
  • Ability to move, lift and place into position light to medium weight, such as wheel chairs onto platforms
Working Environment 
Work is performed outdoors where some safety considerations exist from physical activity, traffic conditions, and adverse weather conditions.
